Website Development and Card Designs: Tangles Salon
I have the great pleasure of working on the team at Becky's Graphic Design. Becky has been a graphic designer for 25 years starting with hand-lettering ads for the local paper. She jumped on the digital bandwagon when she purchased her first computer that came in three boxes. She loves telling the story of her husband putting it together, and that experience created a snowball effect that led to him eventually working in IT. I love working with Becky, and it's my chance during the week to drive a little outside of town and sit in another place working on interesting client projects.
One such project was for a client of Becky's, Tangles Salon. Becky's been working with Kellie at Tangles for YEARS. In fact, this year makes a decade in business for Tangles! From the moment I walked into this salon, I was smitten. The walls are dark brick in varying shades of grey, with dark concrete floors, and the stations are a mix of industrial and rustic. AND THE SMELLS. A Redken Elite Studio, the stylists and colorists are just ADORABLE and so so cool. Interestingly, I ended up finding a "twin" who also has blonde hair and chunky glasses - and wouldn't you know it, she specializes in coloring blonde hair?! Ali is my girl.
As one might imagine having a business for ten years, there were a number of "technical debts" Tangles had accrued, which is only natural when technology changes so quickly and you're busy serving clients! One such technical need was for a new website. Owner Kellie knew her current website was dated and didn't reflect the Tangles tone, and she wanted to support this new look with updated business cards and a new VIP program.
The website was a fun challenge, as there were several customizations I wanted to see happen well. Lots of coding was done to get each element in the right place to fit the vibe of Tangles - sleek and clean, no distracting elements or bright colors. We let the Instagram feed on the home page and the GREAT photos of the staff bring the color. Everything else is like the walls of the salon - varying shades of grey. Kellie is very good to get annual photos taken of her staff members, and since they're all gorgeous, you can imagine how amazing the photography is and now it perfectly reflects the salon, their staff, and their clients.
Kellie had seen some salons with certain behaviors that were WAY cool, like transparent color overlays on images inviting people to check out the Instagram feeds, or the lightbox bios that would open when clicking on a button. We were able to make these specific requests happen and I'm so glad she found them!
Since this is a salon that's very millennial-friendly, it was incredibly important to Kellie for the mobile site to be fully-functional and responsive. So much so, that it was rare for her to look at the drafts I sent her on a desktop - I got a lot of mobile screenshots! I appreciated this, because she is totally right! Mobile is king, especially for younger generations. Through custom coding and tweaking the mobile side of the site, we were able to make the user experience consistent across both platforms. Squarespace is incredibly powerful in mobile responsiveness, but sometimes clients want specific actions to happen that require a developer to make further customizations.
Finally, Kellie was wanting to get some new business cards created, and with the advent of her VIP program, she wanted to create a great client experience with a special card to give to select customers. Becky and I worked closely on this portion, as she is certified in InDesign and has great experience with mass-layout editing. The cards are sleek, and perfectly match the tone of the new website.
Thanks to Becky at Becky's Graphic Design for including me in this project, and thanks to Kellie for creating a GREAT Salon Experience. Can't wait for my next appointment - and I'm super serious about that!
